TiRobot-assisted surgery was carried out in Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital

Recently, the medical team of Orthopedic sports injury from Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital carried out surgeries assisted by TiRobot and completed a TiRobot&O-arm assisted minimally invasive fixation for cprocessus coracoideus scapularis fracture. It is reported that Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital is one of the few medical institutions jointly applied these two advanced techniques.

1. TiRobot made a breakthrough in the restricted zone of traditional surgeries

Ms.Wang fell from a height and fractured her right coracoid and clavicular distal end combined with acromioclavicular joint subluxation. This is a rare and difficult surgery. Since the coracoid is deep in the shoulder and surrounded by muscles and chest, the incidence of coracoid fracture is relatively low.

The most difficult part in traditional surgery is that a long incision is required to fully expose the coracoid and implant the cannulated screw. Due to the deep anatomical position and irregular shape of the coracoid, it is challenging to control the direction of the screw in traditional percutaneous screw fixation surgery. In addition, the bone tunnel at the junction of coracoid and glenoid cavity is narrow surrounded by many brachial plexus and vessels, just like going through thorns. It is quite difficult and risky to operate in the traditional way because it is more likely to damage important nerves and vessels.

2. TiRobot explored with O-arm and perfectly implanted the screw

TiRobot with O-arm can capture 3D data in the surgical zone within 15 seconds. The images are clear with little radiation. With a highly precise navigation system, the operation is much safer with less trauma.

3D data was imported via O-arm for precise surgical plan

In this complex surgery, TiRobot cooperated perfectly with O-arm. TiRobot worked as planned and positioned precisely with an incision at only 0.5cm. Going through the thorns, it navigated perfectly and implanted the screw accurately which made the operation on the complex and dangerous part much safer. Ms. Wang recovered well after surgery and was very satisfied with the medical team and TiRobot.

Currently, only a few major hospitals in China can perform fracture surgery with the O-arm or medical robot. Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital firstly introduced TiRobot III and integrated it with O-arm, the most advanced intraoperative imaging capturing system, which significantly strengthened TiRobot. Since the introduction of TiRobot and O-arm, Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital has completed many orthopedic surgeries including TiRobot&O-arm assisted spine surgery and TiRobot&O-arm assisted lumbar kyphoplasty.

TiRobot as a perfect partner for doctors has built up a medical team fully covered spine, pelvis and limbs in the hospital. TiRobot&O-arm assisted minimally invasive fixation for cprocessus coracoideus scapularis fracture has reached a leading level in the world. This attempt is an innovation and breakthrough for robot-assisted surgeries, which also marks the improvement of Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital in orthopedics.
